San Antonio - The
Millsaps College
Majors, ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III, beat the Tigers 14-4
Friday in a seven-inning, run-rule SCAC game at Twenty Field.
Trinity (20-18,
10-8 SCAC) can finish no higher than second place in the SCAC West
Division. Millsaps improved to 31-5 and 14-4 SCAC. The two teams
conclude their series with a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Trinity and Millsaps split a two-game series last month in San Antonio.
The Tigers
started Friday’s game strong by scoring two runs in the top of the first
inning. Sophomore designated hitter Kyle Felix swatted a two-RBI double
to right-center field. Millsaps got on the board with a run in the
bottom half of the inning .
Trinity took a
3-1 lead in the top of the second, as sophomore third baseman Kevin
Jackson hit a SAC fly to left field. Millsaps answered with two runs in
the bottom of the second, tying the score at 3-3.
Then, the Majors
exploded for five runs in the fourth inning, and took the lead for good.
Millsaps scored three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. The
Tigers’ only other run came in the fifth inning, an RBI double by senior
left fielder Jordan Pennington.
Tiger senior
left-hander Evan Bronson was the starting pitcher, and took the loss.
Bronson (5-4), the first of four pitchers, allowed 10 runs, 10 hits, two
walks and struck out four batters in four innings.
Felix batted 2-4
with two RBIs and two doubles, bringing his total to 13 for the season.
Senior shortstop Stosh Hoover went 2-3 and scored two runs. Pennington
was 1-3 with one run and one walk.
The Tigers
scored four runs, on seven hits, while committing three errors. The
Majors had 14 runs, 15 hits and made no errors. |
