TIger Baseball Falls to UMHB Tuesday Night

San Antonio - The Trinity University Tigers baseball team came from behind, took the lead, but eventually lost 10-6 to The Cru of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Tuesday night in a non-conference game at E.M. Stevens Field.

Trinity now stands at 16-17 and UMHB improved to 19-12. The Cru beat the Tigers 16-5 on Feb. 17 in Belton, Texas.

The Tigers came back from a 1-3 deficit after 1 ½ innings. Trinity sophomore catcher Kyle Felix started the rally with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning, his seventh round-tripper of the campaign. Felix batted 2-4 with an RBI and scored two runs.

Trinity scored one run in each of the fourth, fifth and six innings, to lead 5-3. But The Cru had a big seventh inning, with four runs, and led 7-5. The Tigers put one more run on the scoreboard, in the bottom of the inning, on an RBI single by sophomore center fielder Dylan Early, who batted 3-5 with an RBI.

Leading by just one run, 7-6, Mary Hardin-Baylor widened the margin by three insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Trinity gave it a go in the bottom of the ninth with two walks and a base hit, but ended the game with the bases loaded.

Tiger senior third baseman Steven Ramos hit 2-5 with an RBI. Sophomore right-hander Mike Panozzo was the starting pitcher, hurling for two innings. He was the first of seven pitchers utilized by the Tigers. Junior right-hander Eric Binder pitched four innings and did not yield a run. He allowed two hits, one walk and struck out five players. First-year right-handed pitcher Ben Klimesh (0-6) entered in the seventh inning and took the loss.

Trinity’s pitching staff gave up two home runs in the game, amounting to four runs.

The Tigers (7-7 SCAC) will host Southwestern (15-16, 8-6 SCAC) in a doubleheader Friday, starting at 2 p.m. Saturday’s single game also begins at 2 p.m.

Trinity is in third place in the SCAC West Division, one game behind Southwestern and a half game ahead of fourth-place Hendrix.
