Jackson, Mississippi - The defending
champion Trinity Tigers baseball team remained undefeated at the SCAC
Championship tournament Friday after a 14-4, eight-inning run-rule
victory over the Centre College Colonels at Smith-Wills Stadium.
Trinity (23-19), seeded No. 2 in the West
Division, upped its tournament record to 2-0 at the double-elimination
event. The Tigers will take on Hendrix, No. 3 in the West, at noon
Saturday. Hendrix, also undefeated, eliminated host Millsaps (No. 1 in
the West) in a 9-8 upset.
The Tigers tied the game with Centre (No. 3
East) with one run in each of the first and second innings. Shortstop
Stosh Hoover provided the first RBI with a single. In the second
inning, second baseman Jeff Claydon picked up an RBI on a fielder’s
choice.
Trinity took a 4-2 lead with two runs in
the fourth. Right fielder Dylan Early and third baseman Kevin Jackson
each had RBI singles. The Colonels added two runs in the fifth, but that
would be it for Centre. Trinity designated hitter Nick Pappas accounted
for two of the runs in the fifth, with an RBI double. The Tigers added
four runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by Claydon’s two-RBI single
to left field. Claydon batted 2-3 withg four RBIs and scored one run.
Left fielder Jordan Pennington homered to right field in the seventh
inning, and first baseman Evan Jones singled for an RBI. The Tigers
picked up two runs in the inning. The game winner came in the eighth, as
Pennington doubled to right center for an RBI.
Pennington batted 4-6 with three RBIs and
three runs. Jackson went 3-6 with an RBI and Jones hit 3-5 with an RBI.
Pappas hit 2-3 with two RBIs and scored three runs. Felix scored four
runs in the game.
Right-hander Mike Hunter started the game
and was relieved in the fifth by right-handed pitcher Weston Haaf, who
earned the victory. Haaf (2-0) allowed only two hits in 3 1/3 innings of
work.
The Tigers scored 14 runs, on 19 hits,
while committing three errors. Centre had four runs, on seven hits, with
two errors. |
