Trinity Alumna Establishes Scholarship In Father's Memory

August 30, 2000 - Patricia J. Mitchell, a Tallahassee, Florida resident and a Trinity alumna, donated over $100,000 to the University to establish an endowed scholarship in memory of her father, the late O.R. Mitchell.  The O.R. Mitchell Scholarship will provide financial assistance for business administration students at Trinity University.

Mr. Mitchell was a San Antonio businessman and civic leader, and served on Trinity University's Board of Trustees from 1949 to 1979.  "Mr. Mitchell made many outstanding contributions to Trinity and the San Antonio community," said Marc Raney, vice president for University Relations and Development.  "This gift in his memory will help Trinity remain at the forefront of America's colleges and universities, and ensures that our doors remain open to students of diverse socio-economic backgrounds."

An endowed scholarship is a specially designated fund within the University's endowment.  When an endowment is established, the principal is never invaded.  Only the earnings are used to make financial awards.  There are nearly 150 named endowed scholarships at Trinity.  The University's Office of Financial Aid, based on any criteria established by the donor, awards scholarships to need-based or merit-based students.

Trinity University, founded in 1869, is a highly selective, professionally-oriented liberal arts and sciences institution.  This residential, primarily undergraduate coeducational university is noted for its superb facilities and undergraduate research opportunities.  Through its academic and co-curricular programs, Trinity seeks to develop leaders with high ethical standards.  It is a learning community that has charted its course with a steadfast commitment to excellence for over 130 years.
