Trinity University Physics Department Wins Prize

September 15, 2000 - Tom DeFayette, science education research technician, and Gene Clark, professor of physics at Trinity University, have won an award for the best low cost demonstration apparatus at the International Conference of Physics Teachers conference.  Their winning entry in the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) Low Cost Physics Laboratory Apparatus Competition was a "Double Pendulum Constructed from Inline Roller Skate Wheels."

The award-winning apparatus, which is used to demonstrate deterministic chaos, is mechanically simple while exhibiting visually impressive dynamics.  The low-cost design enables teachers and students to make the device in a few hours using basic hand tools and readily available materials.

The competition was held at the annual AAPT summer meeting at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, from July 29 through August 2.

For more information, contact Professor Clark in the Physics Department at (210) 999-7421 or Susie P. Gonzalez in the Office of Public Relations at (210) 999-8406.
