Home Surreal Home: Noted Art Historian To Explore The Uncanny Nature Of Surrealism And Imagery Of Home Life

Christopher ReedSeptember 20, 2000 - Art historian Christopher Reed will examine the relationship between Sigmund Freud's notion of the "uncanny" and the representation of domestic life by Surrealists during a presentation at Trinity University.  This presentation, titled "Reservations on the Uncanny: Surrealism and Domesticity," is part of the Stieren Arts Enrichment Series.  The presentation will take place Monday, October 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapman Center Auditorium and is free and open to the public.

Freud coined the notion of the uncanny (unheimlich in German) and it is usually used to describe something mysterious, strangely familiar, or evoking terror.  Professor Reed will take the concept and add a more literal translation of the term: un-home-like.  He will explore how many Surrealists used the notion of the uncanny to shape dark images of homes coming apart or becoming places of violence.

Professor Reed is a member of the art history department at Lake Forest College.  In 1996, he edited the anthology Not at Home: The Suppression of Domesticity in Modern Art and Architecture.  Additionally, Professor Reed has published and lectured widely on British art critic Roger Fry as well as on sexuality issues in modern art and architecture.  For more information, contact Trinity University's Department of Art History at (210) 999-7682.
