General Resources
The following resources offer broad coverage of information
related to existentialism as well as general topics in
philosophy. For resources related to specific authors from
your class, see below.
The
Existential Primer
Make this your first stop. The discussion of existentialism is fine but it's the
chart lower on the page showing philosophers and their ideas that may be useful
as you synthesize these authors' ideas and make comparative analyses.
While the sponsoring site is questionable, this page is a must-visit for the
chart.
Companion to the Philosophers
This e-book available from NetLibrary includes entries and bibliographies for
philosophers and writers related to your course topics.
Edinburgh Encyclopedia of Continental Philosophy
(E-book) Entries are included on topics related to existentialism---longer than
a dictionary entry and shorter than a "companion" or "handbook" entry.
Existentialism (From Erratic Impact)
This online database of websites is fairly well accepted as one of the best
online. It's consistently updated and links tend to be active. Most
of the resources you'll find here come from outside websites, so the need to
evaluate the validity of a source will remain.
Oxford Companion to Philosophy
This e-book is available via Trinity's subscription to the NetLibrary electronic
book database. Use either the index or contents to locate entries on
people and topics related to your class.
Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy
This e-book from NetLibrary offers concise entries on topics related to your
course.
The
Realm of Existentialism
The ads are extremely annoying but might be worth sifting past for the ease of
use here. From the website: "This resource provides an overview of
existentialism and phenomenology, and includes information on an extensive range
of existentialist writers, poets, psychologists, and philosophers. The site is
primarily aimed at those hitherto unacquainted with the basics of existentialism
and phenomenology, and offers helpful summary definitions of the two schools of
thought, as well as elementary accounts of some of their essential themes. The
site also features an inventory of canonical figures in the history of
existentialism, a selection of quotations from each of these, and a bibliography
of recommended further reading."
Kierkegaard

online from Marxists.org.
D. Anthony
Storm's Commentary on Kierkegaard
The breadth of this site is what distinguishes it from others,
offering discussion on most of Kierkegaard's published work.
While the site should not be considered a "reference" resource, the
commentaries, timelines, and other information may be useful in
continuing research or encouraging critical discussion on topics
related to S.K.
International Kierkegaard Information
Site includes the International Kierkegaard Newsletter along with
information about other societies and resources devoted to the
philosopher's work. The "Resources" link includes citations to
primary works by S.K. as well as web sites devoted to his ideas and
writing.

writings as well as descriptions of his intellectual process.

includes annotations to work by and about Nietzsche.

related to the philosopher's work.
Camus'

Page includes a biography of the author and selected
bibliography.
Camus' Critiques of Existentialism
From the online journal Minerva, this article offers an even
coverage of work by the author related to existentialist philosophy.
Understanding Camus
This volume in print (Call number: PQ2605.A3734 Z6388 1990) helps
readers new to Camus' work or new to particular texts or aspects of
his philosophy.
Sartre
Sartre poses particular problems for online
researchers. Due to interest on a more pop-culture
level, a wide number of resources are available--the most popular of
which possess little in the way of credibility. Many of these seek
to discuss Sartre's ideas, and do not always deal with his work in
an accurate manner. For this reason, refer to one of the
reference sources listed in the
General Resources
section listed above to find an electronic source on Sartre.
Jean-Paul Sartre
Available at sartre.org, this site includes a number of entertaining
pages---however, most useful might be the "comparative
existentialists" chart at the "Analysis" link. The chart shows
various philosopher's views (using quotations or concepts) in a
comparative format. Also note that the site includes some
full-text materials as well as general commentary from the browsing
Internet public.
Jean-Paul Sartre Archive
Selected archive of works by and about Sartre available online.
Jean-Paul Sartre: Basic Writings
E-book includes primary text by Sartre as well as critique and
interpretation from editor Stephen Priest.
Sartre
Sponsored by the Bibliotheque Nationale in France, site includes a
great deal of information (in French) on Sartre, his work, and his
influence.
Sartre at Britannica Online
Reliable source for biographical information and bibliographies.
Heidegger
Companion to Heidegger's Contributions to
Philosophy
E-book includes signed articles on Heidegger's work in general.
Most of these include or focus on his impact on existentialism.
Ereignis: Martin Heidegger in English
Two strong components of this resource are (1) the number of links
to full-text versions of Heidegger's work---some in English and
others not and (2) the chronology page, which includes many links as
well.
Existential Primer: Heidegger
Biography and bibliography are included here, as well as commentary
(as always, use critical thinking when referring to online
commentary although this resource is often top-notch). Also
note the commercial links to works by and about the philosopher.
Heidegger Dictionary
E-book includes short entries on terms, topics, and figures related
to Heidegger.
Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy: Heidegger
Extensive entry on Heidegger includes bibliography.
Martin_Heidegger.Org
Site includes bibliographies in PDF for Heidegger's work as well as
research sources related to the author. It looks basic but the
information provided is useful.
Cite Your Sources
Articles, books, images, etc. should all receive a citation that
directs the reader to your source. For assistance, refer to the
library's pages for citing sources.
