Searching for Images
In our class together we will only use a
number of resources designed to locate or provide images to
researchers. Be certain to make note of information about
where an image was located as you may need these when citing the
source.
ARTstor
ARTstor provides an impressive database of over
500,000 searchable images.
Tools within the database enable viewing (or displaying)
slides side-by-side and collecting "folders" of images for
classroom use, research, or assignments. These works are copyright cleared for
educational and research purposes.
Grove Art Online
While this resources is primarily used as a reference or
textual resource, some image galleries are included and links
are provided to museum exhibitions and other authoritative web
resources.
Millennium Park
The park's website includes information and images about
various installations location at this Chicago landmark. Note
that high resolution images are available by sending an email
to the webmaster. This information will also be useful
when citing your images as sources.
Resources by Subject: Images
This library page includes a number of online search engines
for locating images, as well as a listing of our subscription
databases that include image galleries.
Yotophoto
New resource that searches for images available from
creative commons sites and public domain resources.
While you may only be looking for images, the
credibility of the resource is still an issue. Internet resources
located using a search engine should be evaluated before they
are included in a scholarly project.
See the library's page on
Evaluating Web Sites for more information.
Searching for Journal Articles
Use databases to find journal articles, magazines articles,
newspaper articles and images related to your topic. For your group presentation assignments, searching by the
artist's name or the name of the work may be most beneficial.
For brief news articles or opinion columns, the library's
general subject database
Academic Search Premier may also be helpful.
Art Abstracts
Index that includes citations and abstracts of scholarly journal
articles covering all fields of art and art history.
Limited full-text access. When you find citations in Art Abstracts and
wish to see if the library has a copy of the article or book, click on the "TOUR
Full Text" button to find information on availability.
Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA)
Index and abstracts for journal articles and books covering
European and American art from late antiquity to modern.
Use the TOUR feature to access an article full-text article
online or for information about print availability.
Grove Art Online
This electronic version of the print reference resource is
fairly new to Trinity's collections. Here, you may find
brief biographical material on artists as well as other types
of entries. Note that most of these entries include a brief
bibliography at the end. These may be used as a jumping
off point to find further information about your topic.
WilsonSelectPlus
This is a full-text database that includes articles from many
scholarly disciplines. The main reason for its inclusion here
as that the journal Public Art Review is included in
this resource, along with a number of architecture and
landscape architecture publications.
Searching for Books and Book Chapters
Use Quest, the library catalog, to find books on your topic.
Because several your course discussions will focus on very
recent issues or exhibitions, books may be most helpful if you
wish to find background information on an artist or a specific
type of creative process. Most of the resources used by art and art history
students are located in the N call number range on the library's
4th floor.
Getting It From Somewhere Else
If the library does not have the article,
book, or other item that you need to complete your assignments, you
can loan these items from other libraries. Do note that this
can take from several days to weeks, so planning is imperative.
Use
ILLiad to borrow items from other libraries.
If you want to search for books that have been
published but that may not be located at our library, consider using
WorldCat. WorldCat allows you to search for books
available in hundreds of libraries across the country and may
provide you with a reference you can use to borrow books using
Illiad.
Citing Your Sources
Articles, books, images, etc. should all receive a citation that
directs the reader to your source. For assistance, refer to the
library's pages for citing sources.
