Information on CPS Revisions in 2003 and 2004 (3-15-05 and 6-23-05)

Unionstats.com has completed its update compiling and posting information from the 2004 CPS.

Beginning in May 2004, the CPS adopted new metropolitan area definitions.

Metropolitan tables for 2004a are provided using the older metro definitions for the 12 months May 2003 through April 2004.

Metropolitan tables for 2004b are provided using the new metro definitions for the 12 months May 2004 through April 2005.

Beginning in 2003, the CPS adopted new detailed industry and occupation codes from the 2000 Census of Population (with modification). These involve substantial changes and improvements from the 1980 and 1990 Census codes used in the past. Information on these codes is included in the Documentation section of Unionstats.com.

The Census has “retroactively revised” the 2000-2002 CPS to include new weights based on information available from the 2000 Census of Population. These files were made publicly available in late 2003. All figures from the 2000-2002 CPS posted on Unionstats.com are based on “unrevised” weights. Published BLS figures for 2002 used the revised CPS (same households, new weights). Differences between the 2002 figures using the revised weights and 2002 figures based on the unrevised weights are very small. Beginning with the 2003, all CPS files, including those used in Unionstats.com, use the “new” set of weights.
