Briefly describe what you do

I run corporate communications, both internal and external, for the Air Force unit I'm assigned to.  This includes producing a weekly newspaper (10K circulation), running a TV station and websites.  As well, I am the overall media spokesperson for the base, interacting with media for all events, to include crisis communication.  Finally, I run all community relations/PR programs to help integrate civic support and education of the base and Air Force.

What other jobs have you had?

Navigator, U.S. Air Force (I flew aircraft)

What are the key skills, abilities, and personal qualities necessary to succeed in this type of work?

Be able to maintain a balance of integrity, professionalism, sacrifice, strong work ethic, patriotism and leadership under stressful (i.e. wartime and crisis) situations.  Strong/confident speaking, writing and interpersonal skills necessary as well as a sense of adventure, desire to travel and dedication to personal physical fitness.

What do you enjoy most about your current position?

The opportunity to travel/experience new people, cultures and situations which test my fortitude and challenge me personally and professionally. Also, being in an organization based on service before self, excellence and integrity -- well, you can trust your co-workers implicitly and know everyone who stands with you in uniform believes and is willing to fight for the same causes you believe in -- democracy, liberty, freedom.  What other career is there that offers you that level of self-actualization?

Most important/valuable lesson or activity in college that impacted your career

Balancing civilian life with military life--ROTC allowed me to experience the Air Force in small dosages while being a "normal" college student...it lends to how real military service is -- balancing family, personal goals and continuing education with service to your country.

What advice for someone entering this field?

Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way and relish in the adventure of it -- work hard, play hard, exercise hard and strive to be the best at whatever you're doing.
