I work in
clinic seeing patients for problems of the eye or vision. I perform
surgery, order diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and educate
patients about their eye diseases. I see pediatric patients and
prescribe |

What are the
key skills, abilities, and personal qualities necessary to succeed
in this type of work? |

Conscientiousness is important. You must be able to ensure that
a patient's problems are fully addressed and that things are not
missed.

interest in medicine and disease, optics and math. Good
hand-eye coordination, excellent binocular vision,

What do you
enjoy most about your current position? |
The challenge
of microsurgery, the rapid advancement in medicine and treatment of
eye diseases, the use of advanced equipment for laser and surgery,
helping people regain vision. People are usually very grateful in
this field. |

Most
important/valuable lesson or activity in college that impacted your
career? |
When I learned
that I really enjoyed directly helping people with their problems
and being involved in caring for people and their medical problems. |

What advice for
someone entering this field? |
You need good
grades and test scores to get into medical school, as well as good
grades and recommendations during medical school to get an
ophthalmology residency. You must like studying science because you
will spend a large part of your life doing that. |
