Job Title

photojournalist

Briefly describe what you do

I'm a freelance photographer based in Dallas.  I shoot for The Dallas Morning News, Texas Highways, LA Times, etc.  My photography is strictly journalism with some portraiture included within that realm.

What other jobs have you had?

staff photographer for DFW Community Newspapers

What are the key skills, abilities, and personal qualities necessary to succeed in this type of work?

technical camera knowledge, an artistic eye, the ability to be comfortable in a wide variety of situations and the ability to connect with people from all social/cultural backgrounds, keen observational skills, a spontaneous lifestyle

What do you enjoy most about your current position?

  • The freedom of being self-employed and the amazing opportunities. I get to meet people from all walks of life whom otherwise I doubt I would have the pleasure to meet.  Each day is so incredibly different

Most important/valuable lesson or activity in college that impacted your career

Trish Simonite's photo classes opened up a world of magic to me.

In matters unrelated directly to photography, starting a "club" at Trinity and then studying abroad for a year were both experiences that had major impacts upon me and, I believe, helped me to be the kind of person who is able to do what I do today.   Follow what you love.

What advice for someone entering this field?

If you love it and want to do it, don't let anyone tell you that you can't.  There is no set way to enter the field of photojournalism--you don't have to major in it.  In my case, I didn't even know what I wanted to do with my life at the end of college.  Start in a small, local paper setting (or even at the uni level), see if you like it, and if so, press on to bigger and better things.   It may be a long road to a career in professional photojournalism, but if you want it and are willing to make some sacrifices in order to obtain it, you can and will make it.
