Briefly describe what you do

I manage two laboratories.  I'm involved in teaching graduate students, postdoctoral fellows as well as our research assistants.  I participate in all aspects of research from the hands-on working on the lab bench to writing manuscripts.

What other jobs have you had?

  • Research Instructor, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center
  • Research Specialist, University of Illinois at Chicago
  • Research Technician, Baylor College of Medicine

What are the key skills, abilities, and personal qualities necessary to succeed in this type of work?

Perseverance!  It's called research because the "re" part of research means you do it over and over.  One experiences a lot more failures than successes.  And sometimes those successes are not very significant.

What do you enjoy most about your current position?

It is enjoyable to witness a student that "sees the light".  When what you are teaching is finally comprehended.  I enjoy teaching because I want the student to become smarter than me.

Most important/valuable lesson or activity in college that impacted your career ?

What advice for someone entering this field?
