Briefly describe what you do   

 

Design, monitor and analyze clinical trials for HIV/AIDS for the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) and Botswana-HSPH Partnership for Education and Research (BHP).  Trials cover different aspects of HIV including antiretroviral response, vertical transmission (MTCT), and co-morbidities (e.g. Hepatitis).  Trials' locations are worldwide (more than 11 countries from 5 continents).

What are the key skills, abilities, and personal qualities necessary to succeed in this type of work?  

1) Ability to multi-task and prioritize
2) Writing and speaking skills
3) Technical expertise in statistics
4) Technical skills in related computer programming (database and statistical analysis)

What do you enjoy most about your current position?  

 

I love being able to tell a meaningful story from a huge database of numbers and medical terms.  Being part of the scientific advances in HIV/AIDS is also very rewarding.

Most important/valuable lesson or activity in college that impacted your career  

Every class in college is training towards your future career.  The ability to express yourself clearly and succinctly -- either orally or in writing -- is critical to most professional (and many non-professional) jobs.

What advice for someone entering this field?

Talk to folks who are currently in the field.
