What are the benefits of attending?

  • Gain advice and access to people who can answer your questions about majors, careers, graduate schools, companies, etc.
  • Obtain possible leads on internships and jobs.
  • Practice developing networking skills and relationships. 

How do I prepare for the event?

  • Prepare cards to make it easy for the people you meet to get in touch with you later.  Feel free to offer one as you meet alumni; ask for one of theirs. Click here to download a template.
  • Be prepared to talk about your interests, major, etc when asked.
  • Ask questions to alumni (samples below):
    • What is your job like?
    • How did you choose your line of work?
    • What are the skills that are most important for a position in this field?
    • Does your work relate to any experiences or studies you had in college?
    • What advice can you give me on entering this career field?
    • Do you know of any opportunities, in your firm or elsewhere, for internships, summer jobs, etc.? 
    • Do you know of other alumni or contacts that might be able to provide information about this career field?

How do I approach someone at the event?

“Hi, my name is ________. I see that you are involved with corporation XyZ. I am interested in learning a little more about that company. What do you do there?”

“Hello, I’m _____. I saw on your card that you are involved in computer science. That is something I was considering pursuing myself.”

“Mr./Ms. ___________, my name is _________. I saw your name on the alumni registration list and I would like to talk to you about how you got started in health care administration.”

“Well, according to the color dots on our name tags it looks like we share the same career interest. My name is ____________ and I am majoring in biology. Did you major in the science too? What do you do now?”

“Hi, I am _______. I see from your nametag that you work at ABCD. Even though it looks like you are in a different department than the one I would like to work in at ABCD, do you know anyone in the _______ area out there?.”
