What is the difference between walk-ins and appointments?

Students can meet with a Career Adviser during walk-in hours (Monday-Friday from 1:30 - 4:00 pm ). Walk-ins are quick meetings that last usually about 15 minutes. Students are seen in a First Come First Serve basis. They are meant for a quick review of your resume or cover letter or a quick questions and answer session or an over view of our print and electronic resources.

Appointments are made for students who are in need of a longer session. Appointments are suggested for Seniors who are using Career Services for the first time. Students interested in internships, or students interested in career assessments.

Do you have a listing of on-campus employment?

On-campus employment is handled by the Human Resources Department located in Northrup Hall, Room108.  Students will find a listing of vacancies on campus.

How long should a resume be?

Generally speaking, a resume should be a page. There are exceptions to this rule. For example, electronic resumes can often be longer. The key to thinking about length in a resume is not how much information you have, but how well it is organized. If you are struggling with the length of your resume, either because it is too short or too long, come to Career Services and let us help you with your format.

Are students required to get academic credit for internships?

No. Some employers require the student participating in the internship to be receiving credit and sometime a particular academic program will require internship credit. But for most students, it is an option that you can design based on your own situation.

How can I get my resume critiqued?

Having your resume critiqued by a career adviser at Career Services is an excellent idea. Resumes are our business! You can bring your resume to Career Services during our weekday walk-in hours, Monday through Friday from 1:30 – 4:00 pm. You can also schedule an appointment if you prefer by calling us at 210/999-8321. We recommend you bring a print copy of your resume, as well as a copy on a disk when you come to the office.

When should I start my job search?

A typically job search for a full-time professional position is 3-6 months. Many employers will recruit only in the fall for their entry-level positions, some recruit all year long. We recommend beginning your job search by October of your senior year to give yourself the best possible options. Career Services has employers recruiting on campus through campus interviews, information tables, information sessions and resume drops as early as September.

What is business attire?

Generally speaking, this means a suit is not necessary for men or women. For men, a jacket and tie is not necessary, for women, hose, heels and jacket not necessary. On the other end of the spectrum, business attire does not mean jeans and tennis shoes. Think pants and a top with a collar (no t-shirts!).

Where can I find salary information?

We offer several different sources for salary information. First, you can come into our office and review the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) quarterly Salary Report of entry-level positions for college graduates. This report is broken down by both major and industry. You can also check websites like www.salary.com and professional associations for salary information. Still in need of help, ask a career adviser.

What size envelopes do I use to mail my application materials?

There is no standard size or generally accepted guidelines on envelopes. You can use a large 9x12 to keep your materials neat, or fold your application materials cleanly and place in a standard business envelope. The key is to get your materials to the employer in the neatest way possible.

How do I find an internship?

Finding an internship is a multi-step process. We recommend you start the process by visiting with a career adviser in Career Services. You'll need to think about what your goals for the internship are (to make money, confirm an occupational interest, make connections, get your foot in the door, etc.) so we can assist you in designing an experience perfect for your needs.
