The second examination will cover the following material: Lauckner and Lintner, Chapters 6, 7, 8, and 10; finding and evaluating information on the Internet; basics of HTML; using Netscape Navigator to browse the web, Netscape Composer to compose web pages, and Paint Shop Pro to manipulate images. Like the first exam, the second exam will emphasize material from the text. However, the second examination will include more questions than the first examination regarding material you have worked on for the labs.
Like the first examination, the second examination will contain three main sorts of questions. First, there will be "objective" questions -- true/false, multiple choice, fill in the blank, etc. These will be taken from the questions in the text at the end of chapters 6,7,8, and 10, or similar questions regarding HTML, Netscape Navigator, Netscape Composer, or Paint Shop Pro. Second, there will be short-answer questions that ask you to explain basic ideas in your own words. Third, there will be essay questions asking you to discuss some aspect of the course in more detail.
The questions at the end of each chapter provide good study material for the "objective" questions. Short-answer questions will either be directly related to the key terms listed at the end of our chapters, or will ask basic questions about the software listed above. (A few examples might be: what is "resizing" an image; what is "cropping" an image; explain the difference between a search engine and a directory; explain the difference between an image file in bitmap format (with extension .bmp) and an image file in GIF or JPEG format; explain the difference between the head and the body of an HTML document. I might also ask questions in which I give you some information about a web page that doesn't work and ask you to explain why -- e.g. a web page with a link to an image file named "my nifty image.gif".)
More sample short-answer questions: explain the difference between synchronous and asynchronous transmission, indicating which is used for transfer of information on the WWW and why; analyze the components of the following URL: http://www.trinity.edu/cbrown/skills/exam2review.html; what is the difference between bitmapped or raster graphics and object-oriented or vector graphics; draw diagrams of a bus network and a fully connected topology network (use five nodes in each case), and explain why a bus network is less expensive; compare the advantages and disadvantages of the three types of wireless communication (infrared, radio frequency, microwave).
Essay questions could include such questions as the following:
2. I might ask you to explain in detail a number of elements that an effective web page should include, with explanations of why they are important.
3. Explain the relation between .bmp, .gif, and .jpg image files. Include discussion of the following: the relative sizes of these files for comparable images, and why; the number of colors available in the different formats; which compressed format would be a better choice for a photograph, and which would be a better choice for a simple logo, and why.
4. Discuss some of the issues involved in constructing 3-dimensional
computer graphics (e.g. the hidden line problem, perspective, shading,
texture).
