Requirements:

Attendance and Class Participation—10%

Attendance is mandatory. You are allowed three (unexcused and excused) absences. For each absence beyond the allowed three, you will lose a half-grade for the semester. That means that a final A turns into an A- if you miss four classes. Miss 5, and an A- turns into a B+, and so on. (I don’t the first three absences so save them for emergency!) Being absent does not change due dates, and it is your responsibility to make sure you turn in work on time. There will be no make-up quiz or test so you need to arrive on time. This course adheres to academic regulations, any questions regarding the Academic Honor Code, please consult you Student Handbook.

Homework—20%

Four types are required—

1)      listening exercises in your workbook

2)      grids on which you practice Chinese calligraphy

3)      translation exercises that you will complete at home and put on the board in class. (late homework will be corrected but won’t receive a grade)

4)      short essays

10 Quizzes —40%

Scheduled quizzes will be given after we have covered 2 textbook segments. There will also be pop quizzes frequently to test vocabulary acquisition.  If you have an excuse from a doctor or professor you may drop the grade.  Otherwise you get a 0.

5 Tests—30%

Test are tentative scheduled for 10/18, 11/5 and 12/6.  There will be no mid-term or final exam. Make-up quizzes and tests will not be given.

**Your final grade will not be altered unless it is a clergical mistake.
