Temporary Mobility Impairment Procedure
A student with a temporary mobility impairment (generally students with lower body injuries requiring the use of crutches or a wheelchair) can work with University staff to seek assistance in maneuvering around campus.
Students with temporary mobility impairments are allowed to rent ELECTRIC scooters or golf carts from private vendors (see below). All requests to bring such vehicles to campus should begin with the Coordinator of DSS. Environmental Safety will help students make arrangements for storage and/or parking. Students sometimes find that friends are also available and willing to help take them to the upper campus for classes and events. This method is usually the most convenient way to be transported.
If a student with a temporary mobility impairment contacts DSS to inquire about a golf cart or scooter, DSS will notify the offices on campus who may be impacted so they are aware of the student’s situation.
Helpful Contacts
Disability Services for Students Ext. 7411 The student should first contact the Coordinator of DSS. DSS will notify faculty members that the student may be individually contacting them about specific issues related to the impairment. Faculty members will then be aware in the event that the student must leave class early or may not always be on time because of transportation issues. If the student has other temporary impairment concerns, please refer to DSS.
Environmental Safety Ext. 7004 Environmental Safety is able to provide familiarization on basic golf cart safety issues, as well as provide a hands-on tour of the campus showing the authorized golf cart routes and parking areas.
Residential Life Ext. 7219 Any student needing temporary assistance in Residential Life should contact the Associate Director of Residential Life.
Health Services Ext. 8111 If the student notifies the Coordinator of DSS of the injury, the Coordinator will notify the Health Services staff. They may provide some medical assistance.
Campus Security Ext. 7070 Campus Security will issue temporary accessible parking permits either for the student or a friend who will be a primary transport resource for the injured student.
Dean of Students Office Ext. 8843 For other issues and assistance, please contact the Dean of Students.
