Personal Counseling

Individual Counseling

We offer personal counseling that is sensitive to cultural differences and LGBT-affirmative. About 10% of Trinity students consult with one of our counselors each year, with the vast majority seeing a counselor for 1-7 sessions.  A session usually lasts 45-50 minutes.

Some of the common reasons that students seek counseling include:

·         Anxiety

·         Concern for another person

·         Depression

·         Sexual orientation issues

·         Loneliness

·         Low self-esteem

·         Mood swings

·         Repetitive thoughts or behaviors

·         Shyness

·         Suicidal thoughts

·         Victimization

·         Use of alcohol or other drugs

Occasionally a student needs counseling that will last for multiple semesters, or the nature of a student’s distress (e.g., drug addiction, anorexia) requires the intervention of a specialist.  In such cases the counselor will provide referrals to off-campus mental health providers with expertise in the student’s area of concern.  About 85% of the time, however, the staff of Counseling Services is able to provide students with the assistance they seek.

Couples Counseling

Our counselors will work with a couple if at least one person is a Trinity student.  We offer counseling for both mixed-sex and same-sex couples.

Psychiatric Consultation

Counseling Services maintains a collaborative relationship with several off-campus psychiatrists to whom we may refer clients, usually for one of the following reasons:

·         To determine if medication might be useful in addition to counseling

·         To supervise the medication that a hometown physician has prescribed

Typically, the student continues his or her counseling at Counseling Services following the psychiatric consultation.  Occasionally, the consulting psychiatrist recommends specialized assistance that requires a referral to an off-campus mental health professional.

Off-campus Alternatives

Some students feel more comfortable seeing a counselor in the community than seeing someone at Counseling Services.  Feel free to call us for recommendations of mental health professionals.

Self-help Information

Resources are available online, and books and brochures are available at Counseling Services.

Online Mental Health Screenings

You may confidentially complete one or more online screening instruments regarding depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.  The feedback you receive can help you determine whether you might benefit from seeing one of our counselors or a mental health provider in the San Antonio Area.
