How to See a Counselor
Appointments
Trinity students may make appointments by calling 999-7411 or stopping by
Counseling Services, 215 Coates University Center (above the Bookstore),
during office hours: Monday-Friday
8:00 to 5:00.
Walk-in Hours
During fall and spring semesters, Trinity students may utilize walk-in
hours Monday-Friday between 3:00 and 4:30 p.m. to see a
counselor for an initial consultation. Students are seen on a
first-come, first-seen basis. (Subsequent visits with the counselor
must be by appointment.)
The First Session
When non-DSS clients arrive at the office for either an initial
appointment or during walk-in hours, they complete a one-page Basic
Information Form and read a two-page Consent to Counseling (pdf) statement.
During
this first session the counselor will seek to understand the student’s
concern(s) and determine whether the counselor can be helpful.
Occasionally the counselor recognizes that a colleague on the Counseling
Services staff has expertise with the student’s concern and recommends a
referral “down the hall.”
Sometimes
a student needs counseling that will last for multiple semesters, or the
nature of a student’s concern (e.g., drug addiction, anorexia) requires the
intervention of a specialist. In such cases the counselor will provide
referrals to off-campus mental health providers. About 85% of the time,
however, the staff of Counseling Services is able to provide students with
the assistance they seek.
