Trinity Finishes First Day at Tourney With Win Over Pomona

San Antonio - The 16th-ranked Trinity Tigers volleyball team won its second match Friday, beating Pomona-Pitzer 20-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-23 at the Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational.

Trinity (7-2) earlier shut out sixth-ranked La Verne 3-0 at California Lutheran University.

Junior setter Caiti Troyer contributed 45 assists and 11 digs against Pomona-Pitzer. First-year defensive specialist Meredith Erwin led the team in digs, with 18.      

Senior outside hitter Amy Mittelstaedt produced 15 kills and 13 digs. Ginger Haley, a senior middle blocker, had six blocks, and senior middle blocker Aly Hazelwood fired up two aces.

Junior right-side player Tayler Malloy accounted for 11 kills, and junior outside hitter Alexis Edwards had 14 digs.

The Tigers play in the final day of the tournament Saturday, taking on Redlands at 10:30 a.m. and Whitworth at 3 p.m. Pacific Time.

The Tigers, ranked 16th nationally, upset No. 6 La Verne in earlier action, and are now 2-0 in the tournament
