Tigers Fall to NAIA # 11 UT-Brownsville

San Antonio - The Texas-Brownsville Scorpions beat the Trinity Tigers 25-18, 25-18, and 25-15 in an NCAA inter-divisional match in Sams Gymnasium on Wednesday.

Trinity, ranked No. 15 in Division III, now stands at 15-6. UT-Brownsville, ranked 11th in the NAIA, won its 16th straight match and improved to 19-1. Last season, the Tigers swept the Scorpions 3-0 in San Antonio.

Tiger senior middle blocker Aly Hazelwood recorded 10 kills and one block. In last Thursday’s 3-0 win over Our Lady of the Lake, Hazelwood chalked up her 700th career kill.

Junior setter Caiti Troyer accounted for 22 assists, nine digs, two blocks and a service ace.  Senior outside hitter Amy Mittelstaedt led the Tigers in digs, with 11. Mittelstaedt also had four kills.  Sophomore middle blocker Maddy Hazelwood had two blocks, as did junior right-side player Tayler Malloy.

Junior outside hitter Alexis Edwards and junior defensive specialist Emily Hilliard each fired in an ace. Edwards added eight digs and Hilliard had seven. First-year libero Meredith Erwin made seven digs.

Trinity travels to Conway, Ark., for the second SCAC West-Central Tournament of the year, which will be on Saturday and Sunday at Hendrix College.

The Tiger volleyball team, ranked 15th in D-III, lost a 3-0 match against NAIA # 11 UT-Brownsville on Wednesday evening
