POST-BACCALAUREATES FROM OTHER UNIVERSITIES

While the vast majority of program applicants to the M.A.T. program are recent Trinity University graduates, each year, a number of highly-qualified post-baccalaureate students from other universities are accepted into this elite, one-year graduate program. Consideration for admission to Teacher Education and the Master of Arts in Teaching Program requires an application and the following:

  1. Bachelor's degree.
  2. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 minimum (2.6 provisional) on the last 60 hours of coursework.
  3. Passing score on the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) or evidence of exemption.*
  4. A minimum combined score of 1000 on the quantitative and verbal sections of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Official score reports must be sent to "Trinity University" (Code 6381).**
  5. College level computer science proficiency as demonstrated by coursework or experience.
  6. A 3-semester-hour course in human growth and development.
  7. Faculty recommendations.
  8. A pre-field practicum experience or significant classroom experience.
  9. An interview with the chair of the Education Department, Dr. Paul Kelleher.
  10. An interview with a clinical faculty member.
  11. Completed application for Post-Baccalaureates to the Teacher Education Program at Trinity University. Download Form

Students may pursue certification at one of the following levels: Early Childhood (age 3) - Grade 4, Grades 4-8, Combined Grades 4-12, Grades 8-12, or All-Level Certification (Music, Art, and Theater Arts ONLY). Other requirements for admission and certification at each level include:

  • Early Childhood - Grade 4 Passing score on the Praxis II-MSAT Multiple Subject Assessment for Teachers (test 0140) OR the Praxis II Elementary Educator Content Knowledge Exam (test 0014)..
  • Grades 4-8 A minimum of 18 semester hours in a content area plus passing a score on the Praxis II exam in that content area.
  • Math: 18 semester hours of math courses.
  • English/Reading: 18 semester hours of English and reading courses.
  • Social Studies: 24 semester hours of social studies. May be a combination of social studies coursework, or may be in one field.
  • Science: 24 semester hours of science. May be a combination of science coursework, or may be in a single field.
  • Grades 8-12 A minimum of 24 semester hours (12 upper division) in a content area plus a passing score on the Praxis II in that content area.

**Note: Applicants who have already earned a Master's degree are exempt from taking the GRE.
