TRINITY STUDENTS (UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION SEQUENCE)

All Trinity undergraduates who meet the admission criteria are eligible to apply to the Teacher Education program. The department expects that Trinity undergraduates who plan to apply for the M.A.T. program will follow one of the plans for certification described in the Course of Study Bulletin (or see pages 157-183 in the bound copy). Required courses within each academic major have been carefully selected to best prepare future teachers for a successful career in Early Childhood-Grade 12 education. In addition to fulfilling the requirements of your academic major, applicants to Teacher Education are also expected to complete several courses within the Education Department.

At a minimum, these courses include:

  • Two practicum courses, from the following three: EDUC 2201, EDUC 2202, and EDUC 2203
  • EDUC 3320: Growing Up in America
  • One field seminar, either: EDUC 3301, EDUC 3302, or EDUC 3303
  • EDUC 4100 Senior Seminar (may be taken in the fall or spring)
  • Students pursuing certification in Middle Grades Education (Grades 4-8) or dual certification Middle Grades / High School Grades are required to take EDUC 4338: Teaching Reading in the Middle Grades
  • Students enrolled in the Special Education Sequence must complete the regular education sequence listed above with the addition of the following: EDUC 3330, EDUC 3331, EDUC 3332 and EDUC 3333

The purpose of the undergraduate requirements in teacher education is to ensure that students achieve the academic content mastery, the intellectual habits of mind, and the pedagogical readiness that are required to gain admission to the fifth-year graduate program and, ultimately, to meet state teacher certifications standards.

Students may wish to consult the general undergraduate course sequence or the special education course sequence for registration information.

Trinity students who intended to enroll in the fifth-year, Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree program may apply to the Teacher Education Program upon completion of at least (30) semester hours and at least one (1) practicum course.
