History
Upward
Bound was established with the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 as an original
War on Poverty initiative. It is one of seven TRIO Programs established to
assist students in overcoming class, social, academic and cultural barriers to
higher education. Other programs within TRIO include Student Support Services, Educational Talent Search, Educational Opportunity Centers, Ronald McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement as well as Upward
Bounds Science and Math and Veterans Upward Bound.
Today,
there are over 750 Upward Bound programs across the United States. The Trinity
University Upward Bound program was established in the fall of 1980 and today
continues an over 25-year history of serving San Antonio students.
