TRANSFER AND NON-TRADITIONAL APPLICANTS

Transfer Students

Trinity University welcomes applications from transfer students with past records that demonstrate a commitment to academic achievement. Admission to Trinity is highly selective, and most admitted transfer students show a minimum cumulative college grade point average of 3.0 or higher (based on 4.0 scale) in full-time coursework. A higher grade point average is desirable if a student has been attending classes part-time or has taken less than four academic courses per semester. Trinity will accept a maximum of 64 transfer credit hours.

Trinity classes are held Monday through Friday, during working hours; few night classes are offered. It is not possible for an undergraduate student to obtain a degree from Trinity through the attendance of evening classes only. Additionally, transfer students who have been asked to leave their prior college due to low grades, academic probation, or scholastic withdrawal are rarely admitted to Trinity, and the University does not admit students on an academic probation basis.

Application Overview

Transfer candidates use the Common Application, and should make sure to check the transfer version of the form. The Common Application is used by over 250 selective universities for admission to their undergraduate and transfer programs. You may register on line to set up a free, secure, personal account, which will enable you to save data and submit your application on line. All other necessary documents for admission are in printable PDF format on this site, including recommendation forms. If you do not wish to submit your application on line, printable PDF application forms, which can be filled out and mailed to the Office of Admissions, are also available. However, there is a $50 application processing fee required for paper applications, whereas applications submitted on line are free of charge.

Transfer applicants must submit the following documents:

  • Common Application (transfer form) including:
    • College Advisor Report
    • Personal essay
    • Application supplement
  • Official High School Transcript or GED Certificate
High school transcript must show graduation date.
  • Official SAT I or ACT results
Scores must be received directly from the testing service or included as part of an official high school transcript. Trinity will use your highest subtest scores from different testing dates to generate your highest composite score. SAT I or ACT scores are not required for students who have been out of high school for more than five years.
  • Official College/University Transcript(s)
Official transcripts are required from each college/university attended. Transcripts must be mailed directly to Trinity by the other institution. Hand-carried transcripts will not be accepted.
  • Application Fee
No fee if the application is submitted on line or a $50 fee if submitting the application by mail.

Transfer applicants may apply for either the fall or spring semester of the academic year. Application deadlines are as follows:

  Application Notification Deposit
Spring Semester October 15 December 1 December 15
Fall Semester March 1 April 1 May 1

The Office of Admissions mails transfer applicants a letter upon receipt of their application, which also indicates the outstanding documents required to complete their file. It sometimes takes several days to process all the forms we receive, so please do not be alarmed if you receive notification of missing documents that have already been submitted. When your application file is complete it will be sent to the Admissions Committee for review. At this time you will be sent another letter informing you when you will be notified of your admissions decision.

Financial Aid for Transfer Students

Need-based financial aid is limited to grants, loans, and work-study and requires applicants to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The student will be notified if additional forms are required. Merit scholarships are not available to transfer students, with the exception of special academic grants for up to two incoming transfer students from the Alamo Community College District.

The cost of tuition, room, board, and fees for the 2007-2008 academic year is $34,372.22.

For more information, visit the Office of Financial Aid website, email financialaid@trinity.edu, or call 210-999-8315.

Housing

All Trinity students are required to live on campus through their junior year (minimum 88 credit hours). Waiver of the on-campus residency policy may be granted to non-seniors who are married, have children (Trinity does not provide family housing) or beyond traditional college age (over 22 years old).

Non-Traditional Students

While most Trinity students are of traditional college age and attend classes full-time, we have a small contingent of non-traditional students returning after a long absence from school or attending part-time. We recommend that this type of student apply after completing at least two semesters of full-time work at another college, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Non-traditional students who have never attended college must meet the minimum high school curriculum requirements.

To receive details on application requirements and documents, please contact the Office of Admissions at (800) TRINITY or 210-999-7207) or email admissions@trinity.edu.

Costs and Financial Aid for Non-Traditional Students

Because most non-traditional students are not housed on campus, costs at Trinity would include only tuition, fees, and recommended stipend for books and fees. The financial aid application process is similar to that for students in the traditional college-age bracket, with the exception that parental income will not be a factor for married students or those students over 24 years of age. If you have been working for a number of years, we strongly encourage you to check with your employer about any programs to help defray costs. Government financial aid is only available to full-time students (those registered for more than 12 credit hours per semester).

Approximate costs for the 2005-2006 academic year are based on full-time enrollment. Part-time enrollment cost is calculated using the per credit hour rate ($893). Visit the Office of Financial Aid website for detailed cost information.
