  Moderator Notes:

Hello AlumNet,

Members of the National Alumni Board and Trinity volunteer leaders met June 25-27 for a Leadership Conference designed to prepare them as ambassadors for the University.  Trinity's five vice presidents discussed achievements, issues and strategic concerns in the areas of the curriculum, admissions, technology, advancement, physical plant and fiscal affairs.  Board members conducted orientation sessions in volunteering with admissions, career services, and reunion planning.  The weekend helped alumni leaders become well-informed and better prepared for serving alumni and the University.  One comment sums up participants feeling for the weekend:

"Trinity remains strong and in the forefront of the nation's leading universities. Additionally, with the addition of Northrup and the beautiful grounds, the University is beautiful!"

Lindsay Ricketts, Class of 2002
lindsayricketts@yahoo.com

On September 10, 2004, I will be participating in the MS Challenge Walk in the Denver, CO metro area, and I can use some fundraising help. The walk is 50 miles spread over three days, and it benefits the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society. MS is a disease that attacks the central nervous system, causing loss of sight and mobility and even paralysis, among other symptoms. Every week, 200 people are diagnosed with this horrible disease. The MS Society is working to find a cure, and provides many invaluable services to those suffering from MS. I am training hard for the walk and working to raise at least $1500 by September. Any help would be greatly appreciated and put to good use. If you would like to help, please follow the link below or email me (lindsayricketts@yahoo.com). Thanks so much in advance! http://www.nationalmssociety.org//COC/personal/go.asp?z=p&a=9801503&n=1&d=COC0EMSC20040910MSC

Colin Oliver, Class of 2002

I will be participating in the Lake Tahoe Marathon on behalf of Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Part of my responsibility as a participant is to raise money to help support patient care and cure research at Roswell. Thus, I come to you for your support. Included in this message is a link to my webpage, where you can make a donation to this worthy cause. Many, if not all, of us have been touched by cancer in some respect or another. Any donation you could give would be greatly appreciated (and is tax deductible). Again, thank you very much for your support not only for me in this endeavor, but for those who are currently dealing with this terrible disease and for those who will have to deal with it in the future. Thank you very much!

Glynnis Robbins, Class of 1996
glynnisrobbins@yahoo.com

A series of wonderful circumstances led me to land in Hartsville, SC, a terrific place to live and visit... especially if you like coffee. I am managing the Midnight Rooster Coffee Shop, an establishment that I helped a friend open almost two years ago. It is a great watering hole buzzing with local color (vibrant and varied to say the least.) We feature live music and an informal art gallery where artisans can display and sell their latest creations... which is convenient since I am playing in a band and creating jewelry of my own. Next on the agenda is the establishment of our local radio show, "Counter Culture," recorded live from "the Rooster" during my morning shift...  Come by and you could be a guest on the program!

I bought a house here last fall, and am having fun making it my own. This August I will be traveling to Mt. Kilimanjaro to get to know the Masai people and paint a mural in a worship center that they are building on the mountain. I will get to play with a lot of kids, too, most of whom have lost their parents to AIDS.  Needless to say, I have retired from my six year teaching career that carried me in San Antonio, Charlotte, and Ft. Worth.  I still have ample opportunity to teach and mentor, just not in a school setting. Life is goooooood!  I'd love to hear from you! Cheers!

We are all well and still living in Houston.  Those of you in the Houston area may recall the tornado that touched down in Houston back in November that destroyed a church.  That is the church where my husband is the rector.  No one was in the church at the time and there were no injuries.  We are planning to rebuild, and now that the initial trauma of the event has passed, we are excited about all the possibilities.

If any old friends are ever in the neighborhood, we would love to hear from you.

Pam Thompson, Class of 1990
pthompson1968@yahoo.com

I have been accepted to the Master of Urban Planning program at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. After I graduated from Trinity, I taught for three years, worked in a bookstore for a while, and then landed a real estate research job at M/PF Research. Last summer I decided it was time for a change. Trying to merge data analysis and real estate, I looked at econ PhD programs with an emphasis in land use. I realised that my focus needed to shift from data analysis to land use. The UIUC urban planning program is housed in the School of Architecture in the College of Fine and Applied Arts, but it emphasizes data analysis and technical abilities. For me, it will be a perfect blend of art and science, of left and right brain, of economics and design. I will be moving to Champaign in mid August, and I would love to hear from any of my old classmates.

Thanks to one alumna, Trinity receives multiple gifts

Alison Lands, Class of 2000, during her Summer Associateship at Deloitte Consulting LLC, learned about Deloitte's "Foundation Matching Gifts" program, whereby the company matches gifts made by employees to their alma maters.

"To my dismay," Alison says, "I saw that Trinity University was not among the schools listed as program participants. Many other Texas schools and small, private liberal arts schools were on that list, but my alma mater was not one of them. Deloitte also uses this list for entry-level recruitment, so I knew that we needed to be on it. "Alison contacted the Development Office and within a few days they made sure Trinity was on the list.

Thanks to Alison, alumni who had made gifts during this past fiscal year were contacted to make sure they knew that Deloitte would match their gift. For their gifts to be matched, they needed to send Trinity a matching gift form from their human resource department. " Today I got an email telling me that Deloitte had already matched the gifts of 8 alumni, an amount in excess of $1500. A small start, but when you consider that Deloitte maintains 5 corporate locations in Texas alone, and over 120,000 employees in 150 countries, this matching program and others like it could really add up."   This past fiscal year, matching gifts contributed to $85,489 to the Trinity Annual Fund.  Thank you to the 110 alumni who took the extra step last year to make sure your gifts would go as far as possible through the matching gift program.

Hundreds of businesses will match alumni gifts to Trinity.  The impact of your gift may be doubled or possibly tripled! Some companies match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses, too.   Check to see if your company provides matching gifts at http://www.matchinggifts.com/trinity/

Volunteers will meet in front of the Witt Center. Given that move-in day is during the working week, please consider dropping by for as long as you can that morning. The first ten alumni volunteers will receive a Team Trinity maroon t-shirt for their participation.  Please contact Elizabeth Halbert, Alumni Volunteer Coordinator, at Elizabeth.halbert@trinity.edu or 210.999.8435 now if you are interested in this fun volunteer opportunity.
