Russell Guerrero, Class of 1983
russell.guerrero@trinity.edu

I first met Yvette Sanchez ’82 in August 1978 while getting my ID in the Bell Center. She was eating lunch and, for some reason, I thought playing the harmonica would impress her….Despite that horrid first impression, we started dating several months later. Now, this June, we will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.

In August it will be 30 years since we met.  We will celebrate that occasion, too.  Without the harmonica.

The 2008 Outstanding Young San Antonian Distinguished Service Award was presented to Mark Larson ’97 on May 28, 2008 by the Rotary Club of San Antonio.

This award honors outstanding young San Antonians who exemplify the Rotary philosophy of “Service Above Self” by making exceptional contributions to the communities in the San Antonio metropolitan area.  As Founding School Director of KIPP Aspire Academy, Mr. Larson has reset expectations and educational outcomes for low-income, minority students from underserved areas of the city.

Under Mr. Larson’s leadership, KIPP Aspire Academy’s students gains on the national Stanford-10 test have been among the highest in the country:  students that enrolled 2-3 grade levels behind have more than doubled their Reading scores and are scoring in the top 10% of the country in Math.  In 2007, KIPP Aspire Academy maintained a 98% attendance rate, one of the highest in San Antonio.  KIPP Aspire Academy was recently named one of “The Best Public Schools” in Texas by the National Center for Educational Accountability for student testing performance over the past three years and the top middle school inside Loop 410 to receive this distinction (Texas Monthly, Dec. 2007).

Past recipients of Young San Antonian award include: Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, former Mayor Henry Cisneros, former Bexar County Judge Cyndi Taylor Krier, Cavender Auto Family’s Rick Cavender, NBA Champion Spurs David Robinson and Tim Duncan, Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson, television anchor Leslie Mouton, Olympic Gold Medalist Josh Davis, cardiologist Fernando Lopez, MD, and Rackspace CEO Lanham Napier.
