Ten years after my Trinity graduation, I went back to school to complete an EdM in Education Policy and Management at Harvard University.  Being back in the classroom was very motivating, as it inspired me to transition to a new position after seven years at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory.  In my new job, I serve as Director of Admissions and Family Services for Cristo Rey Jesuit, a school that seeks to make accessible a quality college preparatory Catholic education to students from Houston's poorest communities. Check us out at www.cristoreyhouston.org

My wife, Laura, and I welcomed our new baby girl to our family on July 9.  Caroline Elizabeth weighed in at 7 pounds & 13 ounces and was 18.5 inches long.  Her 2 and a half year old brother, Judson, is tolerant and accepting at this point. Mommy and baby Caroline are doing well.  After 5 and half years at Direct Energy, I accepted and started a job with Champion Energy Services in Dallas. July was exciting to say the least.

Jason and I recently celebrated our 17th anniversary in an unusual way--we had a new baby!  Siblings Derek (14) and Alyssa (11) are happy to announce the birth of their little sister Caroline Joelle, born 2/26/09 weighing in at a scrappy 4 lbs and 19 inches.  Having a new baby in the house is wonderful, crazy, and exhausting!

Acknowledging that the State of Texas is like a country with wide area and abundant natural resources, I still wish to see Trinity from the global point of economics, business, culture and politics. I wish to see more news of Trinity in relation to other countries.

"In Sickness and in Health" is a First-Year Seminar that explores the relationship between physician and patient.  Professor of Biology Robert Blystone is looking for Trinity alums that are part of the health care delivery system that would like to talk to his students through the medium of Skype about their observations of the physician/patient interactions.  The Internet conversation would be brief, on the order of 15 minutes or so.  If interested, please send him a message at rblyston@trinity.edu. Thank you.

My name is Melva Perez  and a Trinity alumna with a double major in history and English.  I am currently a founding Composition and Journalism teacher at KIPP University Prep High School in San Antonio, Texas.  Our mission at KIPP U-Prep is to provide a first class public school education to all students, regardless of their socio-economic or academic background.

We just welcomed our inaugural class of 91 ninth graders.  We began the school year with a College Readiness Camp where students spent the first week of summer school on college campus' and participated in college courses.  Our goal is that our students begin their academic journey with graduation and college acceptance in mind.

As a part of our college-readiness curriculum, we require students to maintain a weekly student academic planner to build and strengthen their time management and organization skills (an essential element of college success!). We require students to read on a daily basis, and often assign independent reading for lifework (our version of homework).

However, purchasing independent reading books is difficult for our students population, and unfortunately we do not have the resources to purchase books for them, as we are currently in the beginning stages of building our school library.

Any support you could provide in the form of new or gently used books to build our library will be greatly appreciated.  Books should be appropriate for high school students.

Please contact me by e-mail or phone if you are able to assist us.  We greatly appreciate your help!

Regards,

Melva Perez

The musical production of 'Fire on the Bayou' will be staged at the Woodlawn Theatre, January of 2010 and below are alums who are involved:

Isn't it amazing when you start an important project and you need the best people to make it fly, you find Trinity University alumni to make it happen?

Tim Hedgepeth ‘79 , director and I nearly crossed paths at Trinity University in 1976. I had just gotten my MA from Trinity when faculty member Anne Britton staged my musical Princess Alice in the Attic Theatre. Tim Hedgepeth, a freshman theatre major, saw the production.

It was 30 years later that we would finally meet. The McNay Art Museum asked Tim to direct a musical review and Tim asked around the theatre community for the best music director and my name kept coming up. We met, and since then we have directed high quality musical revues every year for arts groups.

We decided that we wanted to work together on a large scale musical theatre work. Tim liked the script and music for Fire On The Bayou, the Cajun voodoo musical with script and lyrics by Trinity alum Mark Leonard ‘75 and music by me. Getting an original work onto a stage is like giving birth - it is not easy. We have had to start our own production company, Allegro Stage Co. to make this project come alive. When looking for a set designer, we went to the best - Steve Gilliam, on the Trinity Univ. theater department faculty. Steve came on board and brought along his wife Trinity faculty member and alumna Sam Carter Gilliam ‘75 as costume designer and Trinity grad Robin Crews ‘75 as lighting designer. All the writers, directors and designers are Trinity University connected. It just happened that way during the search for highest quality.

Yes, and you can hear my sister Susan Riley ‘69 singing in Fire On The Bayou as a Cajun woman in the ensemble.

Fire On The Bayou runs January 29 - March 6, 2010 at the historic Woodlawn Theatre. I think this amazing connection might make a good story for Trinity magazine. Perhaps a special Trinity night at the theatre could be planned? This is where you will see what a Trinity education can do.
