On the evening of January 28, 2011, the Trinity University Alumni Association hosted the 2010-2011 Alumni Awards Dinner honoring two outstanding alumni for their achievements and contributions. Kenneth Smith '65 received the Spirit of Trinity Award and Stephen Butt '77 was honored as Trinity's Distinguished Alumnus.
Kenneth Smith recently retired after 14 years as head of school at Sandy Spring Friends School in Sandy Spring, Md. The Spirit of Trinity Award recognizes exceptional service to the community or University. Stephen Butt is senior vice president of the H-E-B grocery company's Central Market specialty stores. The Distinguished Alumnus Award is given to alumni who have distinguished themselves through personal or professional achievement and is the highest award presented by the Trinity University Alumni Association.
Rex Smith '74 introduced his brother Ken, and the two shared memorable stories of their days as Trinity students. They even entertained guests with an impromptu song about college life at Trinity in San Antonio. Trinity Trustee, Phyllis Browning, introduced Stephen and shared her influence in not only finding him a residence in San Antonio, but also in introducing him to his lovely wife Susan.
Trinity University President Dr. Dennis A. Ahlburg presented both awardees with citation, and Trinity University Alumni Association President Dale R. Shover '96 acted as Master of Ceremonies. The event was well attended by University staff, fellow alumni, and friends and family of the honorees. Out of the 104 guests attending the event, six were previous Spirit of Trinity or Distinguished Alumni awardees.
