The program in studio art fosters students’ creative potential in a context of critical discourse. The department strives to integrate technical and formal art training with conceptual and intellectual development. Serving art majors, minors and the broader student population, studio art engenders an understanding of the vital importance of visual culture in human expression.

Courses are offered in four principle areas of study: painting and drawing sculpture and ceramics; photography and digital imaging; and printmaking papermaking, and book arts. In addition, beginning design courses build a firm foundation for more advanced work, and Outdoor Studio provides students with the opportunity to create works of art in natural settings in the San Antonio area.

The studio art faculty are practicing professionals in their fields who have strong working relationships with the local and regional art communities. Art students also benefit from interaction with visiting artists through The Stieren Arts Enrichment Series, which brings distinguished artists to the campus for lectures and critiques.  The Baker Duncan Fine Arts Scholarship offers generous support for exceptional incoming students planning to major in art.
