Dear majors, minors, and friends of the ART/ARTH department,
Greetings, and welcome back to campus. As in the past, we wanted to
touch base with you here at the beginning of the semester to make some
introductions and to outline some events for academic 08-09.
We hope that all of you will drop by to welcome Dr. Michael Schreyach
and Ms. Jessica Halonen to the department. Dr. Schreyach will be
starting a tenure-track appointment in the ARTH program. As many of
you may remember, Dr. Schreyach is an authority on Jackson Pollock. He
will be teaching a variety of courses in modern (and contemporary).
His office is AMB 332. Ms. Halonen will be starting a tenure-track
appointment in the ART program. An accomplished painter, she will be
teaching courses in painting, drawing, and design. Her office is AMB
234.
Visiting faculty for 08/09 include Dr. Nayla Muntasser (ancient
Mediterranean), Ms. Kelly Ingleright-Telgenhoff (18th/19th centuries),
Ms. Kate Green (contemporary), Ms. Janette Morales (photography and
digital art), and Ms. Kimberly Drennan (architectural design). Faculty
from other departments teaching in the ARTH program this year include
Dr. Sarah Burke (Russian avant-garde), Dr. Jennifer Mathews (pre-
Colombian), and Dr. Jinle He (Chinese). As in the past, we are very
happy to have Ms. Léo Lee and Mr. Randall Wallace teaching in the ART
program. I am also very pleased to report that Ms. Holly Goecker will
be teaching beginning metal sculpture in both semesters this academic
year. Lastly, Kate Ritson and I will be on academic leaves (of sorts).
Professor Ritson will be on academic leave for all of Fall 2008, while
I shall not be teaching for the next two academic years owing to an
NEH grant.
The most important items in the department this year are two searches
for tenure-track appointments in the ARTH program. I shall send out a
separate email to you later in the semester about these searches. As
in the past, we shall rely heavily on the participation of the majors
and minors when the candidates come to visit campus in March and April
2009.
We have two events in the department scheduled for the Stieren Arts
Enrichment Series in academic 08/09. In November 2008 Peter Feldstein,
an artist working in photography, drawing, printmaking, and digital
imaging, will be on campus. He will give a lecture on Thursday Nov. 13
at 5:30 pm entitled “The Oxford Project.” In February 2009 the
accomplished photographers/digital artists Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie
Taylor will be on campus. We shall send details about their visit
later in the semester.
The art gallery, located on the ground floor of the Ruth Taylor Arts
Complex, has three shows planned for academic 08/09. In Fall 08
Professor Trish Simonite will present a show of her recent work. There
are hopes that we shall have a show in February 2009 in association
with the visit by Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor. As usual, the year
will end with show of work by the senior studio majors.
Finally, we plan to have a reception for majors, minors, students
interested in the department, etc. very soon after the Labor Day
break. I shall forward information about that event next week.
Please stop by the departmental office to say hello. As always, if you
have any questions or need some information, do not hesitate to
contact either Ann Mueller (x7682) or me (7648). We look forward to
seeing you soon.
Best,
Mark B. Garrison, on behalf of the Department of Art and Art History
