San Antonio - Trinity had
three members of the women's swimming & diving team selected to the NCAA
Championships Meet.
The NCAA Meet is hosted by the
College of Wooster and will take place at Miami (OH) University in
Oxford, Ohio. The meet begins on Thursday, March 13 and concludes
on Saturday, March 15.
Senior Leta Gatton was selected
to compete in the 100 and 200 freestyle races. Senior diver Lauren
Walstad, the 2006 and 2007 SCAC Diver of the Year, will compete in the
1-meter and 3-meter diving events. First-year Hayley Emerick, who
won this year's SCAC Diver of the Year award, was also chosen for the
1-meter and 3-meter diving competition.
Gatton won the 200 freestyle at
the SCAC Championships this year, besting her own conference meet record
with a time of 1:53.77. The 200 freestyle race at nationals will
be on March 13. In the 100, Gatton was even more impressive,
finishing in a time of 52.46 seconds. Not only did that eventually
earn her a spot at nationals in the event - which will take place on
March 15 - but it was also the SCAC Championships Meet record and the
SCAC Open record for the event.
Walstad came into the SCAC
Championships Meet last month with back-to-back SCAC Diver of the Year
awards to her credit, as well as competing in nationals last season.
She finished second in this year's SCAC 3-meter competition and third on
the 1-meter board.
Emerick was selected as the SCAC
Diver of the Week twice this year, then came into the conference meet
and won on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Not only did
Emerick win, but she broke the SCAC Championship Meet record and the
SCAC Open record in both events. The records were previously held
by Walstad.
Walstad and Emerick will compete
in the 1-meter diving competition on March 13, followed by the 3-meter
board on March 15.
Head Coach John Ryan led
Trinity's women's team to its fifth consecutive SCAC Championship this
year, as well as the eighth title since the 2000 season. Diving
Coach Stan Randall has been with the team since 2002, and has two
Trinity divers in the NCAA Championships for the first time in school
history.
