SAN ANTONIO – Nationally
known speaker
Judge Mitch Crane will deliver a presentation on hazing at Trinity
University’s Laurie Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
The program is made possible in part by an
NCAA Health and Safety Grant and is free and open to the public.
Judge Crane’s lecture, titled “The Rites
and Wrongs of Hazing,” is sponsored by Trinity’s Department of Athletics
and arranged by Campus & Community Involvement.
He
has helped thousands of student leaders
understand their role in preventing disasters that close student
organizations, cost millions in lawsuits and put people in jail.
Judge Crane’s focus for the Trinity
presentation is that hazing is against the law in a majority of states,
but it still occurs. In Judge Crane’s opinion, telling people not to
haze does not work. The aim of his use of humor is to help the audience
understand that hazing does not build friendships or unity.
Judge Crane served six years as a district
judge in Chester County, Pa., and has been a practicing attorney since
1977. He is a senior partner in the West Chester Law Firm of Crane, Teti,
Cox, Trott & Bishop LLP. Judge Crane also was a member of the West
Chester City Council, including two years as president.
He is a brother of Sigma Phi Epsilon
Fraternity, and a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Education Foundation
Board of Governors. Judge Crane has served his fraternity as chapter
counselor, Alumni Board Treasurer and president, as well as spending
eight years as District Governor. He has received several fraternity
awards including the Distinguished Alumnus Award, and the Frank J. Ruck,
Jr. Interfraternity Leadership Award. In August 2005, Sigma Phi Epsilon
Fraternity presented Judge Crane with its highest honor, The Order of
the Golden Heart. It is given to alumni who "with great personal
sacrifice, have given exceptional service to Sigma Phi Epsilon."
Judge Crane has taught English and
political science at the high school level (while coaching track), and
civil litigation at the post-graduate level.
