– Christyn Schumann of Dripping Springs, Texas
(Dripping Springs High School), a recent graduate of Trinity University,
has been selected as one of nine finalists for the prestigious 2006 NCAA
Woman of the Year Award.
The honor recognizes standout female
student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics and community
service and leadership. The winner of the award will be announced at the
annual awards dinner on Saturday in Indianapolis.
Schumann, who earned the bachelor of
science in business administration last May from Trinity, is a four-time
NCAA Division III national high jump champion. She won her third
consecutive women’s outdoor high jump title in May at the NCAA Division
III Women’s Track and Field Championships at Lisle, Ill. Schumann
recorded a Division III season and personal-best jump of 5 feet, 9.75
inches (1.77 meters).
She became just the second woman athlete
in Division III history (1982-present) to record three or more wins in a
row in the event. Schumann won the 2005 and 2004 outdoor championships,
each with a jump of 5-9.25 (1.76 meters).
The versatile Schumann also won the 2005
NCAA Indoor high championship with a jump of 5-8.75 (1.75 meters). She
was runner-up at the 2006 event with a mark of 5-6.50 (1.69 meters).
In April, Schumann captured the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
outdoor high jump title for the fourth consecutive year.
Currently, Schumann is pursuing a master’s
degree in sport management at the University of Texas-Austin. Schumann
previously was awarded a $7,500 Postgraduate Scholarship from the NCAA.
Trinity now has 28 recipients of the
Postgraduate Scholarship program. The NCAA ranked Trinity in the top-10
of Division III schools in number of scholarships received. Since 1995,
22 Trinity student-athletes have received Postgraduate Scholarships.
Schumann earlier was the recipient of the
NCAA Women’s Enhancement Program Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in
Athletics. Tiger head coach Jenny Breuer won the award 11 years ago
while a student at Belmont Abbey College (N.C.).
The other finalists for NCAA Woman of the
Year are: Anne Bersagel, Wake Forest University (cross country and
indoor an outdoor track); Janelle Engle, Old Dominion University (field
hockey); Angela Homan, Auburn University (cross country and indoor and
outdoor track and field); Jennifer Irwin, Ferris State University (cross
country and indoor and outdoor track and field); Adrianne Musu
Jackson-Buckner, State University College at Oneonta (field hockey and
indoor and outdoor track); Angela Pfeiffer, Concordia College, Moorhead
(indoor and outdoor track); Bethany Rehm, Texas Woman’s University
(gymnastics); and Greta Trotman, Barry University (tennis).
While in Indianapolis, the finalists will
also participate in a service project with Habitat for Humanity. |
