San Antonio -
Trinity's baseball team was shut out for the second
time this season in a 7-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference defeat
at the hands of Austin College on Friday afternoon.
Trinity (14-17, 5-5) made three costly errors in the seven-inning game,
allowing three unearned runs. Austin College scored a pair of runs
in the third to take the early lead, adding another run in the fifth.
In the sixth, the Kangaroos finally got their first earned run and
closed the game with back-to-back two-run innings.
Tiger starter Drew Bignall (2-2) pitched well, but got no support from
his offense in this one, as Trinity had just five hits. Bignall
gave up four runs - one earned - through five plus innings, allowing six
hits and striking out four.
Nick Vera finished 2-3 in the game, hitting his team-leading 13th double
of the season. Bobby Zabor and Richie Smith also had hits for the
Tigers, as did Andreas Verrios.
Trinity had two hits to lead off the bottom of the first inning, but
could not get anything more to get on the scoreboard. It would be
the only inning of the game in which the offense had more than one hit
in an inning.
The two teams continue the Friday doubleheader with a nine-inning game
later this afternoon. Austin College won 7-6 last night to open
the four-game series, which concludes on Saturday at noon.
