Trinity's baseball team opened up a Wednesday
doubleheader with a 10-4 win over Doane (NE) College, securing the
team's seventh consecutive victory.
Trinity (12-9) runs its home record to 8-0 this season, and all seven
games of the winning streak have come at E.M. Stevens Field - the home
stadium for the Tiger baseball team.
Doane actually opened the scoring with a run in the first inning, but
Trinity answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning and never
trailed again. Trinity scored two more runs in the next two
innings to jump out to a 5-1 lead, but Doane rallied for to cut into the
lead in the fourth.
Doane scored three runs in the fourth inning, but would not score again.
Trinity scored three runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth, then
added two more runs in the next four innings to account for the final
score.
Tiger starter Drew Bignall was chased from the game in the fourth, but
relievers Ryan Poffenroth and Clint Robertson gave up just two hits over
the final 5.2 innings to secure the win. Poffenroth (4-3) earned
the win with 3.2 innings of work, striking out a career-high six batters
in the game.
Nick Vera and Jeremy Bays collected three hits each in the opening game
to lead Trinity's offense. Vera was 3-4 with one RBI and three
runs scored, while Bays was 3-5 with three runs and three RBI.
Bays had a double and a triple and was just a home run away from hitting
for the cycle.
Steven Ramos was 2-4 with three runs scored, while Blake Holman and
Andrew Lawson both finished 2-3 in the game. Holman also added two
RBI for Trinity.
The two teams finish off the doubleheader this evening with a
seven-inning game.
