San Antonio -
Trinity's seven-game winning streak was snapped by
Doane (NE) College in the second game of a Wednesday doubleheader,
losing by a final score of 5-4.
Trinity (12-10) lost for the first time at home this season, falling to
8-1 at E.M. Stevens Field in 2007. Doane pulled ahead early in the
game, and never relinquished the lead, holding off a furious Trinity
rally in the final innings of the seven-inning contest.
Doane opened the game with two unearned runs in the first, while Trinity
scored one in the first to make it 2-1 after one inning of play.
Doane proceeded to score three more runs in the next two innings, and
Trinity was held scoreless until the sixth.
In
the sixth, Trinity knocked in three runs on five hits, but missed the
chance to tie the game with two runners left on base in the inning.
Ryan Poffenroth pitched well in relief for Trinity, shutting the door on
the Doane offense that was hitting on all cylinders early in the game.
Starter Ryan Hopkins (1-1) took the loss, giving up five runs - three
earned - on seven hits. Poffenroth struck out five in 4.0 innings,
yielding just three hits, and totaling 11 strikeouts in 7.2 innings of
relief in the doubleheader.
Nick Vera led the offense with a 3-3 performance, hitting his team-best
fourth homer of the season with two outs in the first inning. Vera
scored two runs in the game to increase his season-best total to 25 runs
this season. Vera also goes 6-7 at the plate in two games today.
Jordan Pennington went 2-3 with a double and one RBI, while Zach
Bukowski was 1-2 and Andrew Lawson came off the bench to crack an RBI
single in the sixth.
Trinity will have a few days off after a tough stretch of games at home,
playing eight games in the past seven days. The Tigers travel to
Schreiner University next Tuesday for a single game before a four-game
SCAC road trip to Millsaps College.
