Millington, Tennessee - Trinity's
baseball team watched its 2007 season come to a close as Rhodes won game
three of the SCAC Divisional Playoff series 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity (19-22) forced a decisive game
three with a 9-0 shutout in yesterday's action, which was preceded by a
15-4 series-opening win by the Lynx. Rhodes entered the playoff as
the SCAC East Division champions, while Trinity was the No. 4 seed in
the West Division.
The Tigers fell behind after Rhodes put up
three runs in the third inning off of starter Zach Bukowski (1-2), who
was charged with the loss. Nick Vera cut into that lead with a
fourth-inning RBI single, but the Lynx would not be denied access to
next weekend's SCAC Championships Tournament. The team scored two
more runs in the fifth to pull ahead 5-1.
That would be all that Rhodes starter Chris
Catalanotto (6-1) needed as he pitched a complete-game four-hitter,
allowing just one earned run. Three different players had three
hits on offense for the Lynx, including J.R. Bizzell, Mason Mosby, and
Daniel Vanaman.
Vera finished with two hits in the game for
the Tigers, including a seventh-inning triple that led to the team's
second run. Jordan Pennington and Bobby Zabor also had hits for
Trinity, with Zabor scoring the team's second run.
Rhodes will play at next weekend's SCAC
Championships in Georgetown, advancing with today's victory. The
Trinity baseball season ends with the loss.
