San Antonio -
Trinity's baseball team gave up two late runs in the
second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday night, as Loyola-New Orleans
University earned a doubleheader sweep with a 2-1 victory.
Trinity (14-15) scored a run in the sixth on a solo homer by Andreas
Verrios, who finished 1-2 in the game. Loyola then scored two
unearned runs in the ninth inning to take the lead and ruin a solid
outing by Trinity starter Zach Bukowski.
Bukowski (0-1), in his first start of the season, gave up just two
unearned runs on three hits through eight plus innings of work, as he
was lifted in the ninth. Bukowski struck out four batters, but
after the first hitter of the ninth reached on an error and the next
batter singled to put two men on with no outs.
Loyola quickly got two outs in the bottom of the ninth, with the first
being a warning track fly out to left-center by Blake Holman that nearly
cleared the fence and tied the game. Richie Smith had a pinch-hit
single to left field, which was followed by Evan Jones reaching after
being hit by a pitch. Andreas Verrios then walked to load the
bases, but Jeremy Bays pinch hit and popped up to end the threat.
Trinity was held to six hits in the game, but Tiger pitchers held Loyola
to just four hits. The biggest difference was the fact that Loyola
had no errors and Trinity had two costly errors - one of which led to
both runs by the visitors.
The Tigers will host Austin College in a four-game SCAC series that
begins on Thursday night. With a combined total of four Trinity
wins or Hendrix losses, the team will officially qualify for the SCAC
Divisional Playoffs in Millington, Tennessee. Friday will feature
a doubleheader, followed by Saturday afternoon's series finale.
