Richardson, Texas - Trinity's
baseball team opened the season with a seventh-inning come-from-behind
win to beat University of Texas-Dallas on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (1-0) fell behind in the third when
the Comets rattled off six runs in the bottom half of the inning to
break open the scoring and take control of the game. The Tigers
chipped away at the lead with a single run in the fourth and a pair of
runs in the sixth, but still trailed by three headed into the final
inning.
UT-Dallas was within one strike of taking
the win, but with two outs and two runners on base, Blake Holman took a
3-2 pitch over the wall in left field to tie the game. The Tigers
were so energized by that hit, that the team rallied for 10
additional runs to total a 13-run inning and take an unlikely 16-6
win.
Holman finished the day 2-5 with four RBI
and two runs scored from his cleanup spot in the lineup. Nick Vera
was 3-3 with three RBI and four runs scored, narrowly missing an
historic feat. Vera was only a single shy of hitting for the cycle
in the game, also walking and reaching on a HBP for five total times on
base in the game. His leadoff homer in the fourth inning was the
first run of the season for Trinity.
Bobby Zabor also had three hits to tie Vera
for the team lead in this game, finishing 3-5 with one run and three
RBI. Andreas Verrios also had a pair of hits and two RBI, and
Steven Ramos came off the bench to record two RBI. Stosh Hoover
was 1-2 with two runs scored as well.
Drew Bignall (1-0) scored the complete-game
victory on the mound, allowing six runs on 12 hits and striking out
eight batters. Bignall did not allow a walk in the game, and the
eight strikeouts ties his career-high - a mark he hit three times last
season.
