Sherman, Texas - Trinity's baseball
team took the opener of a four-game series at Austin College with a 6-2
win on Friday night at Baker Field.
Trinity (19-8, 7-2) was led by a standout
performance from starting pitcher Brian Oates. Oates, a senior
righthander, struck out a career-high 15 batters in the game, thrusting
his team into the lead in the SCAC West Division. The 15
strikeouts are the fourth-most for a Tiger pitcher in school history.
The complete game was the third in the
career of Oates, who also won his 20th career game in the process.
That ties him for ninth all-time on Trinity's wins list, and the 15
strikeouts moves him into the top five in career history.
After Austin College took the lead on a
third inning sacrifice fly, Trinity posted four runs in the sixth to
take control of the game. Kyle Felix hit his second triple of the
year in the inning to drive home the third run of the day for the
Tigers, and turned out to be the only extra-base hit of the night for
Trinity.
The Tigers finished the scoring with single
runs in the seventh and eighth innings, and Austin College was held to
just four total hits on the day.
Felix finished 2-4 with a run and an RBI,
while Jeff Claydon had two hits and two RBI for Trinity. Stosh
Hoover nabbed a pair of hits and scored twice, while Dillan Early also
had two hits in the game.
The series continues with a doubleheader on
Saturday afternoon, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The finale will be a
Sunday afternoon game at 12:00 p.m.
