Austin, Texas -
The 2008 Tiger baseball team
opened its season with a 7-1 victory over Concordia (TX) University on
Sunday afternoon.
Trinity (1-0) fell behind early, but scored
seven unanswered runs from the fourth inning on to come away with the
win in the first game of a doubleheader.
Tiger starter Evan Bronson (1-0) went the
distance in the seven-inning game, giving up one run on four hits while
striking out five batters. Bronson gave up a run in the first on a
pair of hits, but shut down the Concordia bats the rest of the way,
allowing just two more hits in six innings.
Trinity's offense got on track in the
fourth inning, as a leadoff double by first-year leftfielder Kevin
Calbick sparked an inning that
led to a two-run single by first-year rightfielder John Prato Matthews.
Senior catcher Zach Fregosi also drove in a run in the four-run inning.
The Tigers added another run in the sixth on a homer from Prato
Matthews, who finished 2-3 with two runs and three RBI in his Trinity
debut.
In
the seventh, Calbick hit a two-run homer that capped the scoring.
Calbick finished 4-4 with two runs and two RBI in the opening game of
his career.
Senior shortstop Stosh Hoover was 2-4 with a run scored, while
first-year DH Kyle Felix finished 1-3 with a run. Junior third
baseman Steven Ramos also drove in a run in the game.
Trinity and Concordia will finish off the doubleheader later this
afternoon. The two games were originally scheduled to be Friday
night and Saturday afternoon contests, but weather in South Texas forced
the games to be moved. Today's originally-scheduled series finale
has been moved to Monday night in San Antonio.
