Conway, Arkansas - Trinity's
baseball team survived a 10-inning battle with Hendrix College on
Saturay afternoon, pulling out a 3-2 win in the first game of the SCAC
doubleheader.
Trinity (10-6, 2-0) and Hendrix were
supposed to play just seven innings in the first of two conference games
on Saturday afternoon, but instead, the two teams went beyond even the
normal nine innings.
Both teams played four scoreless innings
before the Tigers were finally able to get on the board with a run in
the fifth. Trinity also plated a run in the next inning, taking a
2-0 lead with just two chances left for Hendrix.
The home team was up to the challenge,
though, scoring a run in the sixth to get on the board and cut the Tiger
lead in half. In the bottom of the seventh, a pinch-hit single
with one out eventually led to a game-tying sacrifice fly that sent the
game to extra innings.
Despite an 11-strikeout day, Trinity
starter Brian Oates had to settle for a no-decision in this one, as he
was chased from the game in the eighth after giving up a leadoff walk.
Oates gave up just two runs on seven hits through seven innings, walking
just two.
Evan Bronson came on in relief, allowing no
runs and no hits in the final three frames. Bronson also struck
out five batters in the game to shut the door on the pesky Hendrix
offense.
In the 10th, Trinity took advantage of a
leadoff walk that was followed by a sacrifice and an RBI single that
turned out to be the game-winner. Kevin Calbick drove in the run
with his second hit of the day, finishing 2-4 with the RBI.
Stosh Hoover also had two hits for the
Tiger offense, while Dominick Robusto finished 1-3 with a pair of walks.
Pinch-hitter Kevin Jackson drew the leadoff walk in the 10th that led to
the winning run.
Trinity and Hendrix finish off the
doubleheader later this afternoon, then the two teams will finish off
the weekend series with a single game tomorrow at noon.
