San Antonio - The Tiger baseball
team locked up the SCAC West Division title with a 13-8 win over
Millsaps College on Friday night, opening up a four-game SCAC series.
Trinity (25-10, 11-2) answered a three-run
first by Millsaps with a four-run bottom half of the inning to take its
first lead. That first inning showed what kind of game it would
be, as the two teams combined for 21 runs on 23 hits in the series
opener.
Evan Jones hit his 21st double of the
season in the game, making him the new single season record-holder at
Trinity. Jones was intentionally walked in the fourth, but then
drove in two runs with his record-breaking double in the very next
inning.
The Tigers led 5-3 after four innings, but
Millsaps tied it in the top of the fifth after a throwing error brought
home two runs for the visitors.
Trinity's answer was a five-run inning that
gave it a 10-5 lead that prove to be enough to prevail in the offensive
showcase. Millsaps scored a run in each of the final three
innings, but the Tigers were able to match that production to keep the
five-run cushion.
The top three hitters in the Tiger lineup -
Kevin Jackson, Kevin Calbick, and Stosh Hoover - all had two hits in the
game. Jackson also scored three runs, while Calbick and Hoover
combined for three more runs and three RBI.
Steven Ramos drove home three Trinity runs,
while Jeff Claydon and John Paillet went 2-4 with one RBI each.
Claydon also scored twice, as did DH Kyle Felix.
Britton Horn (2-0) took the victory,
throwing two innings of relief for the Tigers, giving up one run on two
hits and striking out two batters. John Prato Matthews struck out
three in the final 1.2 innings, giving up just one run to finish off the
game.
Trinity and Millsaps will continue the SCAC
weekend series with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. The series
finale will be Sunday at noon.
