What a difference a day can make!
On Saturday, the Tigers lost 10-0 to
Millsaps in a run-rule SCAC series-opening game. Later that evening,
Notre Dame edged the Tigers 11-8 in a hard-fought contest at Wolff
Stadium, as part of the Irish Classic.
Sunday was entirely different a different
story at E.M. Stevens Field, as the defending SCAC champion Tigers were
3-2 winners over the 12th-ranked Majors.
Senior left-handed pitcher Evan Bronson
played a key role, as he hurled his first complete game of the season.
Bronson fanned 10 batters, allowed two earned runs, three hits and two
walks in nine innings of work. He improved to 2-2 with the victory.
Trinity (9-13, 4-4 SCAC), which beat
Millsaps for the SCAC championship last April, struck first on Sunday
with one run in the fourth inning. Senior designated hitter Jordan
Pennington cracked his second home run in as many days, a solo shot
which gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Pennington, who recorded his sixth
round-tripper of the season, batted 2 for 4 with one RBI and one run
scored.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the fifth, as
sophomore catcher Kyle Felix doubled to left center, driving in
sophomore right fielder Dylan Early. Felix went 2 for 4 with one RBI,
while Early hit 2 for 3 with one run.
Millsaps (19-2, 8-2 SCAC) tied the game
with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Senior left fielder Hayes
Brian scored on a throwing error. Sophomore first baseman Will Hawkins
singled to right center and drove in sophomore center fielder Jeremy
Aliff. Hawkins was 1 for 4 with and RBI.
The deadlock was broken in the seventh
inning. Junior first baseman Evan Jones also sent the ball over the
fence for the second straight day. Jones homered to right center, for
his second home run of the season, as Trinity led 3-2. He batted 1 for 3
with one RBI and one run.
Millsaps sophomore right-hander Aaron
Williams (4-1) went the distance, allowing three earned runs, eight
hits, two walks and struck out five Tigers.
Trinity left five players on base and
Millsaps stranded three.
The Tigers will conclude their
regular-season schedule April 18 and 19, in a three-game series with
Millsaps at Jackson, Miss.
Trinity will host Cardinal Stritch
University (Wis.) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a single game. |
