Kerrville, Texas - The Tiger
baseball team jumped out early, but then had to hold off a scrappy
Schreiner University to take a 7-6 road win on Tuesday afternoon.
Trinity (5-6) took a 4-0 lead after a pair
of runs in both the first and third innings. After Schreiner
finally got on the board in the bottom of the third, the Tigers answered
with three more runs to take control of the game.
That control was relinquished in the fifth,
though, as Schreiner scored four runs to cut the lead to just two.
In the sixth, the home team plated another run to make it 7-6 with three
innings to play.
Clint Robertson struck out five through
four innings of work, and Mike Hunter (1-0) came on in the middle
innings to earn the win. Hunter yielded just one run on three hits
through 2.1 innings, striking out three batters. Evan Bronson came
on to earn his first save of the year, pitching the final two innings
without allowing a hit.
Schreiner brought the winning run to the
plate in the ninth, but Bronson and the Trinity defense shut the door
with its second double play of the game.
Kyle Felix was 3-5 with two RBI to lead the
Tiger offense, while Evan Jones also drove in a pair of runs and scored
another.
Stosh Hoover continued his red-hot
offensive streak. Hoover was 1-2 with three runs scored, drawing
three walks and tying a school record with four stolen bases.
Trinity will return home this weekend to
host Hendrix College in a pair of Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference games on Saturday and Sunday.
