Georgetown, Texas - The Southwestern
University Pirates opened a two-game SCAC series with a 4-2 win over the
Tigers Saturday at Rockwell Field.
Trinity, the
defending SCAC champion, stands at 7-9 overall and 3-3 in conference
play. The Pirates improved to 9-10 and 2-3 SCAC.
The Pirates got
on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning as catcher Michael
Murphy hit a SAC fly to left field off the Tigers Evan Bronson, driving
in center fielder Todd Boone. Trinity answered with a run in the top of
the second inning, on a RBI single to center field by first baseman Evan
Jones. He drove in left fielder Jordan Pennington for the run.
Pennington hit
safely in his 23rd consecutive game. He paced the Tigers,
going 3 for 4 with one RBI, two doubles and one run. Jones went 1 for 4
with an RBI.
Trinity took a
2-1 lead in the fourth inning as Pennington doubled to right field,
sending catcher Kyle Felix across the plate. But Southwestern countered
at the bottom of the inning as third baseman Ricky Gomez singled to
center field and drove in right fielder John Wooten.
In the seventh
inning, the Pirates took the lead for good, with two runs, on RBIs by
left fielder Alan Lowry and first baseman Kyle Belski. Lowry batted 3
for 4 with an RBI and scored one run.
Pirates pitcher
Wes Willis went the distance and improved to 4-2. Bronson, who hurled
seven inning and struck out six batters, took the loss. He dropped to
1-2.
Trinity had two
earned runs, seven hits, committed no errors and left five players on
base. Southwestern scored four earned runs, cracked eight hits, made no
errors and stranded nine players.
The two teams
conclude their series at 2 p.m. Sunday.
