San Antonio -
Trinity's football team remained undefeated this season with a 44-14
victory over Birmingham-Southern College on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity (4-0) stalled on its
first two possessions offensively - settling for a pair of field goals -
then exploded for 24 points in the second quarter to open up the game.
After Peter Licalzi hit
field goals of 30 and 40 yards in the first quarter, Chris Baer (two
yard run) and Riley Curry (four yard reception) both found the end zone
to give the Tigers a 20-0 lead in the second quarter.
Birmingham-Southern then
scored on a 32-yard pass play to make it 20-7, but Trinity answered back
on its next offensive play.
Greg Bielski took a pitch
from quarterback Blake Barmore around the left side, then raced down the
sideline for a 73-yard touchdown run.
Licalzi also hit a 21-yard
field goal with one second left to make it 30-7 at the half. The
three field goals for Licalzi ties the school record, last achieved in
2002.
Barmore finished with a
career-high 285 yards in the game, completing 22-27 passes (81.5%) and
throwing one touchdown. The completion percentage breaks the
school record for a single game (20 or more completions).
Bielski finished with 103
yards rushing on just five carries to lead Trinity's ground attack.
Bielski became Trinity's first 100-yard rusher since 2004, and his
73-yard run was tied for the sixth-longest in school history.
Baer added a rushing
touchdown in the third quarter, while backup QB Bryant Wilson plunged
one yard over the goal line for Trinity's final points.
Trinity's defense allowed
232 total yards in the game, with just one of those yards coming on the
ground. Until the final few minutes, the Tigers had held the
Panthers to negative rushing yards in the game.
Chris Jones led Trinity with
seven tackles in the game - including two sacks for a loss of 11 yards.
David Morgan finished with five stops, three of which were for loss.
Trinity will travel to
Rhodes College next weekend to continue Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference play. The Tigers return home on October 20 for Alumni
Weekend against Sewanee. The 2007 Athletics Hall of Fame class
will be inducted at halftime of that game. |
